CHECKPOINT 4 – PRESENTATION & GRAPHICS

This game is presented in pixel art style, and I have tried to keep it consistent in all elements. Some assets were purchased and some were downloaded for free from itch.io. Due to some limitations, some assets do not look exactly the same style as the others (the art style of the apples or the dishes look different with art style for player) because they were drawn in different pixel sizes by different artists.

Most of the items for kitchen area as well as the player sprites were purchased and downloaded from https://limezu.itch.io/moderninteriors, tilemaps for the farm were drawn by same artist and were available for free online. The dish sprites were downloaded for free from https://ghostpixxells.itch.io/pixelfood. Some fruits and plants/trees were downloaded from https://zeschpix.itch.io/pixel-foodfruitvegetables and https://bagong-games.itch.io/hana-caraka-crops-pack.

For the cover title, I managed to draw it myself (tried to keep it consistent with the art style by doing it in pixels). Colors have also been carefully picked so they match with the presentation of the game.

The progress for this week includes:

- Title screen with PLAY button and HOW TO PLAY button (the content is yet to be updated)

- Game over screen with PLAY AGAIN button (this screen will also show end score)

On top that, to make the game feels better, I have also added background music and sound effects for:

- Clicking a button

- Player picking up fruit/ ingredients from the ground

- Cooking sound (chopping, frying, closing oven/fridge door)

- Bell sound when the dish is ready to serve

- Sound for when money is added

- Wrong order/ expired order sound

The target from last week has also been done, which was to make customer order. The plan to make more dish has changed. I have decided to stick with these 5 different recipes, which I think is enough to make the game exciting and not over-complicated.

This week I also shared the game to a few friends, the feedbacks are:

- incomplete tilemap on the left and right side (this was caused by change of screen size, but now it has been fixed).

- environment colliders were too close to each other, making it hard for the player to move freely between certain objects (colliders have been adjusted, player now can walk around better).

- player can move out of the screen (fixed).

- pan was not responsive when pressing Space to cook (pan was positioned too close to the oven, which cause the overlap between the colliders. This was fixed by moving the oven slightly farther from the pan).

- few seconds of silence after background music ends, before then it starts again.

For next week, targets are:

- adding the content of How To Play

- finishing up with the end scoring display
